MA in Journalism & Mass Communication at University of Mysore India

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Communication and development were indeed the catchwords of the 20th century. In modern India, Communication and Journalism are perhaps the most potent forces for the successful functioning of our largest democracy in the world. Indian Journalism has a glorious historical heritage of public service of more than 200 years. As a professional institution, Indian Mass Communication has a towering personality which resembles excellence, glory and sacrifice. However, education and training in Communication and Journalism in the country is of less than 50 years existence. There is no doubt that development of mass communication teaching and research assumed significance in India especially in the post-independence era. In India about 100 Universities including agricultural Universities and other private coaching institution train about 2000 students annually in Communication and Journalism.
The history of 150 years old Kannada Journalism is unique. All India Radio, Doordarshan, Press Trust of India, United News of India, Advertising, Public relations, Film industry, freelance journalism and other sectors of mass communication have grown remarkably in India as well as Karnataka State. Though the span of mass communication was wide enough the need to give it a professional touch and to equip it with a competitive spirit was felt throughout. The Department of Studies in Communication and Journalism was the progeny of this background
