Communication Program Objectives
Upon completion of the communications program at Thomas College, students
will be able to:
1. Demonstrate computer literacy and facility with technologically based communications,
including desktop publishing and web-based communications
2. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills
3. Demonstrate an understanding of marketing and public relations
4. Complete an internship in an area related to their specific interest
5. Complete a portfolio outlining their individual accomplishments in communications
6. Demonstrate an understanding of how communications functions in a variety of
contexts, both domestic and international; and
7. Demonstrate an understanding of how various factors (historical, social, cultural)
may potentially impact the communications process.
Journalism is the art of storytelling. Journalism students should aspire to be critical thinkers and to have independent, inquiring minds and a breadth of knowledge and depth of understanding that St. Thomas University identifies as the goals of a liberal education.

St. Thomas University offers a major in Communications, designed to train leaders in the field of modern communications management.
Communications students study the management of information by the public sector, special interest groups, non-governmental organizations, corporations as well as by journalists in newsrooms and citizen journalists in emerging media. Students will learn communications strategies, while at the same time critically examining the political and social impact of information management.
Drawing on the resources of the highly-regarded Journalism programme, the Communications major allows students to develop writing and critical thinking skills, the essential tools for success in a variety of professions.
