Bachelor of Arts in Communications at University of South Carolina Spartanburg
As an integral component of the College of Arts and Sciences, the communication degree program will be recognized for its rigor and integrity, the faculty for its excellence in teaching, professional service and research scholarship. The program is designed to support the overall mission of the University by enhancing the intellectual, cognitive, ethical, cultural, professional and social development of our students. Students will employ critical and creative thinking; be philosophically, technologically and culturally literate, be effective communicators and be appreciative of the visual and performing arts and humanities. Students will respect others through understanding ethnic, racial, gender, cultural and ideological differences and will work cooperatively and collaboratively. The Department of Fine Arts and Communication Studies offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Studio with an emphasis Graphic Design and a Bachelor Of Arts in Communications with concentrations in theatre, speech, journalism and electronic media. The mission of the Department is to enhance the intellectual, ethical, cultural, and professional development of fine arts and communications students. The faculty is committed to preparing students to become competent professionals in Music, Art, Theatre, Speech Communication, Journalism and Mass Communications, and Conflict Resolution.
The Arnold School of Public Health offers the Master of Communication Disorders (MCD) degree using distance education. The MCD was developed to assist the South Carolina State Department of Education with its plan to upgrade bachelor’s-level public school speech correctionists to the master’s degree, as required by federal law (PL 99-457). The program was eventually made available to residents of other states.

Print and electronic journalism students
The School of Journalism and Mass Communications offers courses that use live, televised instruction and videotaped instruction that benefit those who wish to become professionals in some aspect on mass communications. These courses are open to both degree and non-degree seeking students.
Journalism and Mass Communications is a concentration area within the communications degree.
The roles of the individual and mass media in the Information Age are studied within the journalism and mass communications program. Students become critical journalism and media studies practitioners, who are ethical, socially responsible, well rounded, and fair-minded reporters and producers of visual and verbal messages.
