A minor in written communication can enhance any number of majors, including Business, Communication Studies and English. In addition to traditional coursework in these majors, the written communication minor focuses on journalism, news writing, feature writing, technical writing and a variety of creative writing styles.

Communication Studies is an interdisciplinary, liberal arts program designed to help students develop such fundamental communication skills as information gathering and processing, problem solving, and audience analysis, as well as facility in written, oral and visual communication.
Students learn to persuade, to influence and to negotiate, to generate and adapt ideas, to design projects and develop programs, and to plan, organize, evaluate, and solve problems. Ample opportunity is afforded for extensive practical experience in a variety of communication fields including journalism, advertising and public relations. The field of communication focuses on how people communicate as individuals, in society, and in the workplace. The program at Mount Mercy is an outstanding interdisciplinary major that integrates classroom study with outside internships.
Communication students are encouraged to join the Communication club, FACE or the Mount Mercy Times. Both are great opportunities to gain invaluable experience while at Mount Mercy.
Complementary majors/minors include journalism, multimedia/design, public relations, business with a marketing emphasis and English.

The field of communications has melded with technology to produce a complex network of media that opens up exciting possibilities. As more and more companies spread across the globe and buy, sell, and trade internationally, there is a critical need for media professionals who can marry the technology and the messaging in their profession.
The Mount's
The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University are exclusive users of the Common Application, a not-for-profit organization that serves students and member institutions by providing an admission application —online and in print— that students may submit to any of the more than 300 members. Membership is limited to colleges and universities that evaluate students using a holistic selection process.
