Students interested in careers in communication and journalism will find that our department offers a broad range of professional and research courses in a sound interdisciplinary academic program. Courses include writing, speaking and analyzing messages; forms of interpersonal communication; mass media effects and audiences’ interpretations of media messages and images.
Degrees can be earned in communication and journalism. Within these degree areas, students may specialize in news/editorial, public relations, advertising, photojournalism or visual communication. Other career opportunities include human relations, consulting, education, sales, business promotion and diversity training. The department encourages students to pursue internships, and couples academic preparation with unique opportunities for professional experience. Welcome to the Department of Communication at Indiana University Northwest. The purpose of the communication program is to provide students with an opportunity to investigate communication processes, develop communication skills and learn how to facilitate the communication of others.

The Speech-Language Pathology and audiology areas are concerned with communicative behavior. Included in this area are the studies of systems underlying the normal communicative process (speech and hearing science, phonetics, acoustics, anatomy and physiology); development of speech, hearing and language functions; deviations from the normal communicative process (speech-language pathology and audiology); and diagnosis and management of speech, language and hearing disorders (speech-language pathology and audiology practice).
The Division of Communication Disorders offers a bachelor’s (B.S.) degree in speech-language and hearing science. The bachelor’s degree is considered preprofessional preparation for entrance into a graduate program in either speech-language pathology or audiology.
Requirements SPCH S121, SPCH S122, and three 3 credit hour speech, communication, telecommunications, or journalism electives at the 200 level or above. Students must also complete the general requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences. With careful planning, it is possible for students to eventually earn an Associate of Arts—Concentration in Communication through successfully completing required courses offered during a combination of evenings, summer sessions, and weekends.
Telecommunications
IU Northwest does not offer a major or minor in telecommunications at this time. Courses in Telecommunications are TEL R204 and TEL C200.

A unique opportunity in northwest Indiana
The Master's degree program within the Department of Communication and Creative Arts at Purdue University Calumet offers a broad range of courses covering theories and research methodologies in the following areas: mass communication, interpersonal communication, organizational communication, performance studies, political communication, rhetoric and speech communication. The program is highly flexible and allows each graduate student to plan his/her course of study in consultation with an academic advisor.
