Major in journalism at Winthrop University
Students majoring in journalism usually are interested in careers in newspaper journalism, magazine journalism, public relations, advertising, or business journalism.
Journalism students take courses in news reporting, news editing and reporting public affairs and choose from editorial interpretation, feature writing, public relations writing, and magazine editing. They take graphics or photo illustration in the Department of Art or Department of Design.

The Bachelor of Science in Science Communication at Winthrop is a degree program unique in the Southeast. Started in 1985, the program develops a wide range of communication skills and teaches students to apply these skills in scientific and technical fields. This degree is designed to prepare students who are interested in science but don’t want to pursue a traditional scientific career (such as medical school or a scientific Ph.D.) for careers involving writing and reporting on scientific and technical subjects for the popular press and in-house industry publications. The Journalism program recently became the fifth major available in the School of Communication at Illinois State .
Journalism focuses on getting well constructed information from one group of people to another. While most Journalism schools focus on the print modes of newspaper and magazine, this innovative program also includes top notch broadcast journalism and visual communication (web) journalism. Students considering the Journalism program should enjoy writing.
Students completing the Journalism major at Illinois State need to choose one as their main sequence. Students may round out their major by taking additional course-work in the other two areas.
International Journalism is an interdisciplinary major drawing from coursework in French or Spanish, and journalism. Students in the major prepare for careers not only as journalists, but also as professionals with knowledge and skill to address issues and needs of diverse communities. The department of Modern Languages and Literature can provide more information.
