Barton’s mass communications major offers pre-professional training that prepares you for entry-level positions in specific industries and for graduate school. The program features three areas of concentration: Audio Recording Technology, Broadcast/Video Production, and Print and Electronic Journalism. And because these three areas share many courses, completing two concentrations—and enhancing your marketability—is easy.
As an audio recording technology student, you’ll take courses such as Recording Technology, Digital Audio Production Techniques, and Audio for Film and Video.
Broadcast/Video Production classes include Production, Broadcast Scriptwriting, Audio for Film and Video, and Broadcast Journalism.
In print and electronic journalism, you’ll study basic procedures and production techniques, reporting, editing, and public relations writing.
Upper-level courses include Law and Ethics in Mass Media and the Senior Seminar course, which requires completion of a capstone project. The Senior Seminar additionally assists you with interviewing skills and writing your résumé—just what you need if you’re preparing to enter graduate school
Students majoring in journalism usually are interested in careers in newspaper journalism, magazine journalism, public relations, advertising, or business journalism.
Journalism students take courses in news reporting, news editing and reporting public affairs and choose from editorial interpretation, feature writing, public relations writing, and magazine editing. They take graphics or photo illustration in the Department of Art or Department of Design.

Winthrop graduates hold positions such as newspaper reporter, newspaper editor, advertising account executive, public relations counselor, newspaper graphic designer, advertising graphic designer. Their jobs include :
You’ll spend at least three semesters in practicum courses gaining hands-on work experience in your area of concentration. You may find yourself running sound for on-campus theatre productions, producing shows in our on-campus studio, or working on the campus newspaper.
Concentrate in audio recording technology and you’ll be recording and mixing music in the professional Sara Lynn Riley Kennedy Recording Studio, which offers a full complement of microphones and processors, and fully equipped Digital Audio/Midi Suites that utilize the latest software, such as Pro-Tools, Sonar, and Reason. Students at every level have access to the studio.
