Major in Visual Communication Design at Iowa Wesleyan College
Mount Pleasant, Iowa, with its 8,500 friendly people, is full of history, good schools, fine churches and prosperous businesses – all of which supply students with outstanding opportunities. Mount Pleasant is located in southeastern Iowa at the junction of U.S. highways 34 and 218. This convenient location offers four-lane access to I-80, I-70 and Des Moines. The community enjoys daily Amtrak service to Chicago and points east as well as Denver and points west. Commercial airlines in Burlington and Cedar Rapids are only a short distance away, while the Mount Pleasant municipal airport accommodates private aircraft.
Proudly, Mount Pleasant is the home of the annual Midwest Old Settlers and Threshers Association Reunion. This event attracts over 100,000 visitors every Labor Day Weekend. The celebration displays an ever expanding collection of antiques as well as hundreds of pieces of steam-powered farm equipment. Visitors are able to participate in shows, activities, demonstrations and parades throughout the reunion.
Mount Pleasant is the home of numerous buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places including the Harlan Lincoln House and the James Van Allen Home. Recreational activities in Mount Pleasant include, golf, tennis, swimming, a community fitness and recreation facility, city parks and playgrounds, and two nearby state parks.

Visual Communication Design
The BA Major in Visual Communication Design requires 39 credit hours. Students complete 12 credits of the Studio Foundation, and then present a portfolio of their best work for review in order for the department to assess whether they are ready to declare a candidacy in the BA degree. Upon passing portfolio review, Visual Communication Design majors pursue specific programs using digital equipment, complete at least one internship in the field, and prepare a professional portfolio of work.
The department creates professional designers leading the advanced design culture in the 21st century by teaching special theories with the basic principles of design. It develops formative abilities focusing on identities, creativities, and the visual communication abilities in accordance with characteristic of each media and various visual factors.

Visual communication design professional activities contain many subcategories of specialization. One large area of specialization is print media, which is concerned with the design of printed materials such as books, magazines, brochures, posters, corporate literature, and annual reports. Packaging graphics, exhibit design and way-finding systems are other areas of focus. Hypermedia, or interactive computer-based media, is a direction in visual communication design that is becoming increasingly important.
A minor in Visual Communication will provide experiences directed toward the development of visual literacy: creative problem-solving and the design process, graphic techniques, visual language systems and the organization of visual elements. Especially useful to those students majoring in Marketing or Professional Writing, the Visual Communication minor will provide a practical mix of experiences complementing both verbal and visual communication.
The minor must be completed within the student's graduation timetable.
The Visual Communication minor is available to all students except those pursuing the Graphic & Communication Design degree.

The Communication Department pursues the study of how humans make and interpret meaning through the design, delivery and evaluation of messages as individuals, in media, and in various cultures and contexts. In pursuit of this overall goal, three fields of study are offered: Communication Studies, Media Studies, and Public Relations.
The Communication Studies major focuses on the design and impact of messages on the individual in various contexts and cultures.
