The School of Journalism and Mass Communications offers courses that use live, televised instruction and videotaped instruction that benefit those who wish to become professionals in some aspect on mass communications. These courses are open to both degree and non-degree seeking students.

The Arnold School of Public Health offers the Master of Communication Disorders (MCD) degree using distance education. The MCD was developed to assist the South Carolina State Department of Education with its plan to upgrade bachelor’s-level public school speech correctionists to the master’s degree, as required by federal law (PL 99-457). The program was eventually made available to residents of other states. All programs in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (Master of Communication Disorders; Master of Speech Pathology, Doctorate of Philosophy) are accredited by the Educational Standards Board and Professional Services Board of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. For admission to The Graduate School, a baccalaureate or higher degree from a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting agency is normally required. Applicants should submit a complete application packet including official transcripts of college academic work, letters of recommendation, and official score on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The Graduate Bulletin and Admission Application are available on-line. In addition to the above, applicants may be required to submit an additional writing sample demonstrating evidence of creative work.

Students majoring in journalism usually are interested in careers in newspaper journalism, magazine journalism, public relations, advertising, or business journalism. Journalism students take courses in news reporting, news editing and reporting public affairs and choose from editorial interpretation, feature writing, public relations writing, and magazine editing. They take graphics or photo illustration in the Department of Art or Department of Design. Employment Winthrop graduates hold positions such as newspaper reporter, newspaper editor, advertising account executive, public relations counselor, newspaper graphic designer, advertising graphic designer. Journalism and Mass Communications is a concentration area within the communications degree. The roles of the individual and mass media in the Information Age are studied within the journalism and mass communications program. Students become critical journalism and media studies practitioners, who are ethical, socially responsible, well rounded, and fair-minded reporters and producers of visual and verbal messages.

An internship is the single most important step toward employment. That’s why you’re required to complete an internship as part of your degree. Audio recording students have recently interned at: Radio Express, Inc., Burbank, California Osceola Recording Studios and Bass Music Enterprises, Raleigh, North Carolina Sea Note Recording, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina Mill West Studios, Fayetteville, North Carolina IMI, Ivey Music International, Nashville, Tennessee Black Lodge Recording, Eudora, Kansas Broadcast/video students have interned at many North Carolina commercial and public television stations.
