Friday, March 27th, 2009

The need to communicate. The ability to be understood. Most of us take it for granted. But for far too many, young and old, the ability to be understood is a constant struggle. They want to communicate. They need to communicate. But they can’t produce the sounds, words, or sentences that make their message understandable.

Speech Language Pathologists are there to help, bringing communication therapies to a range of speech-language-hearing disorders – whether brought on by disease, injury, age, or disability.

Outstanding Preparation – Part-Time
The Department of Communication Disorders offers outstanding Communication Disorders programs at the undergraduate and graduate level. The programs are designed for part-time completion, so students can work, live their lives, and advance their career and educational goals at the same time.

The MHS: Entry-Level Degree
The entry-level degree for Speech Language Pathologists is the Master of Health Sciences in Communication Disorders. Our Master’s program provides thorough preparation for entry into the field and meets Illinois’ academic requirements for licensure, and certification to work in Illinois public schools, as well as the profession’s national certification standards. Admission is competitive.

The BHS: Pre-professional Preparation
Because the entry-level degree for Speech Language Pathologists is the Master’s, the Bachelor of Health Science in Communication Disorders is a pre-professional degree. In other words, the degree is designed to prepare you to enter the Master of Health Sciences in Communication Disorders program.

The BHS as Second Bachelor’s Degree
A Bachelor of Health Sciences in Communication Disorders is the required undergraduate degree for entry into the MHS in Communication Disorders degree program. But what if your bachelor’s is in another discipline? Explore the BHS in Communication Disorders as a second bachelor’s degree.
