Associate in Communication Studies at Gavilan College

The Gavilan College Communication Studies program continues to grow and will soon offer an extensive Associate of Arts Degree in Communication Studies pending Chancellor’s Office approval. Employers and universities have expressed the necessity for workers and students to be able to communicate with diverse groups of people. We listened and have broadened our focus to offer an Associate of Arts Degree in Communication Studies to meet these expressed needs. This degree will provide students with a foundation of skills in the art of communication in various contexts, including interpersonal, intercultural, small group, and in public settings. This well-rounded degree will prepare graduates to transfer to universities, to better serve employers, and to help build stronger communities.

The associate of arts degree program, is designed for adults who have zero or minimal college credits. Students complete foundational course work in communication, history, art, literature, mathematics, science, and Bible in approximately 34 months. The actual program may take longer to complete once breaks are included. Course work is designed with a Christian worldview to help participants integrate faith with learning. Students finishing the degree will be eligible to move directly into one of the existing FOCUS degree-completion programs in Business Administration, Business Management, Christian Counseling, Communication Studies, Human Resources Management, Marketing, Ministries, Psychology (Criminal Justice, Marriage and Family, or Health Psychology emphasis).

Students will:
Build a foundation for completing a baccalaureate degree
Develop analytical skills
Study with other adults and integrate faith with learning
Develop skills applicable in the workplace

Pattern Description:

This degree pattern is a two-plus-two pattern designed to help students fulfill their freshman and sophomore year requirements at CCBC and directly matriculate through their junior and senior years in the University of Baltimore Corporate Communication program. To receive an A.A. degree from CCBC, a student must complete 36-39 credits of General Education and a minimum of 60 total credits as required by the Humanities and Social Sciences curriculum.

CCBC’s Corporate Communication pattern is coordinated with the University of Baltimore through an articulation agreement linking the two Corporate Communication programs. It is recommended that students who intend to major in the field should consult with the program coordinator at CCBC in order to choose courses that satisfy the University of Baltimore transfer requirements stipulated in the articulation agreement.

Mass Communications provides opportunities for students who wish to continue their studies at a four-year institution in fields such as studio production, film, electronic media, journalism, and disciplines in corporate communications such as advertising and public relations.

The Associate of Arts degree with an emphasis in Speech Communication gives students a broad background in communication competencies. Speech communication courses improve interpersonal communication skills and teach presentation techniques. Students taking courses in speech communication gain enhanced awareness of the impact communication skills have both in the personal and professional arenas. Both the traditional rhetorical approach (oral presentation) and the behavioristic approach (communication theory and skill) are reflected in speech communication course offerings.

Students who desire practical experience in their career fields may enroll in an academic co-op course through Cooperative Work Experience.

The Associate of Arts degree with an emphasis in Speech Communication provides students with a solid foundation for careers that involve a high degree of interaction with the public.
