The Master of Health Science in Communication Disorders is uniquely designed to see you through your education – and beyond. Unlike most speech-language pathology programs, our MHS has been developed – and accredited – without its own clinic. Our job isn’t to prepare you to work for us, but to ensure you’re ready to enter the profession with the background and experiences you need to step into real-world employment.

So all of your practicum work will be completed through our network of more than 150 practicum sites, providing a range of experiences beyond the campus and in the types of communities you’ll be working in. You’ll gain experience in medical and school settings, putting your education to the test while gaining invaluable experience – and proving your abilities.

The Master of Counselling program provides counsellor education for students reflecting ethical and cultural aspects of Canadian life with a focus on province-related needs and trends. The program promotes the development of a solid knowledge base and strong clinical skills, while fostering personal growth and transformation. Students are prepared to be ethical, competent, service-oriented mental health practitioners.

Artfully speaking, many are called, but not so many receive the education needed to establish and maintain a career as a graphic designer. An associate degree as a graphic technologies designer from Gateway Technical College separates you from the crowd with training in web page design, digital photography, drawing principles, advanced illustration and advanced design and publishing. You’ll also leave Gateway with a portfolio of work to present to prospective employers because you will have completed an internship. Certificates in graphic technologies also are available in the areas of desktop publishing and electronic publishing. In view of the rapidly expanding market for web-based information and video animation, you can draw a picture of yourself smiling with a degree in graphic technologies from Gateway.

As one of our graduates, you will possess a wide range of academic and transferable skills, including research methods, problem-solving, time management and attention to detail. You will also be able to articulate how these skills are related to a variety of occupations.

Recent joint honours graduates have gone on to successful careers in teaching, public administration and the civil service, the media, the police, social work and retail management. Many have also gone on to undertake forms of postgraduate study. As a joint honours student, you will always be able to show to employers that you have more than one string to your bow.

Communication and Society provides an excellent foundation for careers in organisations where the management and presentation of communication is deemed important. Communication and Society students frequently take up positions as communications professionals, especially in the voluntary sector or in health and education, as well as in a variety of non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

In our major plan, you can become skilled in creative processes that use art and technology to communicate ideas—so you can transform messages into visual communication that transcends words. Through this training and education, you can learn to use color, type, symbols, computer images, and photography to produce messages to clearly inform and persuade viewers; aesthetic judgment with project management skills to develop overall communication strategies for clients; collaborate with marketing researchers, public relations specialists, and advertisers to develop design alternatives; and with illustrators, computer artists, photographers, and printers to complete compelling designs to effectively communicate client messages.

Technical Communication Graduate Program

The Communication, Writing and the Arts Department offers a master of science (M.S.) in technical communication designed to help students succeed in this rapidly evolving profession. It prepares students for upper-level positions as managers, supervisors or consultants. This program may be useful for people in a variety of fields including education, graphic design, job training, marketing and multimedia.

Major Requirements
The Bachelor of Arts in Technical Communication requires 40-41 credits (internship credits are either 3 or 4 credits). Courses fall into two categories: prerequisites (courses taken before required courses) and required course work. Up to 12 credits may be transferred or taken at the lower-division level.

I did not declare communication as my major until my junior year. Most of the other students in my class had been taking communication courses since our freshman year. So even though I knew most of the other students, I didn’t know the professors, I didn’t know the field, and I felt like everyone was light years ahead of me. Immediately, I was welcomed into the communication department by the professors and the other students. I knew then that Mary Baldwin was the right choice for me. I realized at a larger institution, I would not have received that same type of one on one attention that I was so desperately in need of at the time. The education I received has been a great asset to me in my career. For one, I am frequently asked to give speeches, toasts, and presentations. I am constantly praised by my colleagues for being so polished of a speaker. Being a graduate of a women’s college gave me the confidence to become a leader in my chosen field. Being a communication graduate of Mary Baldwin College gave me the foundation needed to become that leader. Another really great asset is the communication professors themselves. I am a believer that learning is a life long process. Since my graduation, I have frequently called on both Dr. Dorries and Dr. Araujo for their guidance and professional opinions. Fitchburg State College’s Communications Media Department offers students the education and experience of being part of one of the most fascinating fields of study. In combination with the Liberal Arts and Sciences Program, Communications Media fosters the development of skills critical to adapting to an ever changing technological and knowledge-based society.

Four-Year Undergraduate Program
The Communications Media program prepares students to assume communication positions as freelancers, independent producers, employees of corporations, institutions or media organizations, as well as a continuation in graduate level study.

The program provides a blend of the principles and practices necessary for the effective design, production and evaluation of media for information presentation by graphic, photographic, film, video, electronic and print technologies.
